ArtsLab Shopfront's artists in residence

Over and Out

I write this lying in a hospital bed in Adelaide, city of churches and I have ArtsLab to thank for my current location.

Its actually much better than it sounds. Since the final showing of ArtsLab in October, my work on ‘Words They Make with their Mouths’ has continued and I have brought it to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. My life for the past three weeks has been performing a show that I wrote to a completely new audience in a strange city. I have people who I know and respect congratulating me on my work. It is being reviewed by journalists, assessed by Fringe judges and appraised by international promoters and presenters. And the hospital? As it turns out, the cheapest accommodation in Fringe time is in the Nurses quarters of the Royal Adelaide hospital. Very Soviet kitsch, but all part of the experience.

All of this would not be possible without my time in Shopfront’s ArtsLab program. When I look back at my life a year ago I am amazed at how far I have come. ArtsLab gave me so much it is difficult to even quantify. Apart from the product of the show, the skills I developed over the 6 months will be integral in a lifetime of creative development. The emphasis placed on understanding my own process means that I am confident to enter the big wide world and continue producing the type of theatre I want to see.

Shopfront ArtsLab provides an environment where imagination reigns. The community provides the shared experience and resources to realise far flung ideas and projects that just-might-work. I will always remember ArtsLab as a period of my life where everything I held up was met with excitement and a steely determination to make it happen. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

For now, I must head off to perform the last few performances of ‘Words’. If you’re curious about the next stage of the show’s life in Adelaide check out
